How to Take a Mental Health Day and Actually Rest

You took a day off to recover, and somehow you ended it more tired than you started. The morning went on half-answering work messages, the afternoon on errands, and the evening on guilt about not doing enough with the free time.

You took a day off to recover, and somehow you ended it more tired than you started. The morning went on half-answering work messages, the afternoon on errands, and the evening on guilt about not doing enough with the free time.

A mental health day is meant to lower your stress, not move it to a different room. Done well, one day can take the edge off weeks of strain. Done badly, it becomes a weekday version of a busy Saturday. This guide covers when to take one, how to ask for it without overexplaining, and a simple plan for the day itself so you actually come back steadier.

When a mental health day makes sense

Not every tired week needs a day off. But some signals suggest that pushing through will cost more than a pause would:

  • You reread the same email three or four times and still cannot take it in.
  • Small things, like a slow queue or a missing spoon, make you disproportionately angry or tearful.
  • You have slept badly for more than three or four nights running.
  • You dread the next workday from the moment you wake on the one before. If that feeling mostly arrives at the end of the weekend, our piece on Sunday night anxiety may help more.

Two or more of these at once is a good reason to stop for a day. A mental health day is not a cure for burnout or depression, and if these signs last for weeks, talking to a doctor is the next step. But as an early pressure release, it works well.

How to ask for a mental health day

Most people lose an hour of their day off writing and rewriting the request. Keep it short. You do not owe your workplace a medical history.

A message like this is enough: "I am not well today and will be taking a sick day. I will be back tomorrow and will pick up anything urgent then." If your company has personal days, use those words instead. Two sentences, sent before your usual start time, then close the app.

If you can plan ahead, even better. Booking a day five to ten days in advance lets you clear deadlines and tell colleagues, which removes most of the guilt. Planned rest tends to work better than waiting until you are empty, a point we cover in more depth in why scheduling rest works better than waiting.

Why "do whatever you feel like" is weak advice for a mental health day

The usual advice is to have no plan at all and simply follow your mood. It sounds kind. For a tired brain, it often goes wrong.

When you are depleted, what you "feel like" tends to be the easiest thing in reach, which is usually a phone. Three hours of scrolling feels restful while it happens and leaves you foggy afterwards. An empty day also leaves room for chores to creep in, because a pile of laundry is louder than your need for rest.

A loose structure works better. Not a schedule with times, just three or four anchors that give the day a shape. You can drop any of them, but having them means you are choosing rest rather than drifting into whatever is loudest.

A simple plan for the day itself

Here is a shape that works for most people. Adjust it, but try to keep the order.

Morning: sleep, then something slow

Turn off your alarm, but not by much. Sleeping until noon can leave you groggy and make tonight harder. An extra 60 to 90 minutes is usually right. Then eat a proper breakfast sitting down, without a screen. This small act tells your body the pace has changed. If you live with others, let them know the night before that you are taking the day for yourself, so you are not pulled into their plans by default.

Late morning: get outside

Spend 20 to 40 minutes outdoors. A slow walk with no destination is ideal, and leaving your phone at home makes a real difference, as we explain in why a short walk without a phone resets a stressful day. Daylight in the first half of the day also helps your sleep that night.

Afternoon: one gentle, absorbing thing

Choose one activity that holds your attention without demanding much: cooking a simple recipe, a jigsaw, reading a novel, drawing, a long bath, a calm game you know well. Do one thing for an hour or two rather than sampling five.

Evening: close the day on purpose

Before you go to bed, spend five minutes writing down what is waiting for you tomorrow, then close the notebook. This stops the list from following you to bed. Aim to sleep at your usual time so the next morning feels normal.

What to avoid on your day off

  • Checking work messages "just once". One look usually leads to an hour of mental drafting. Turn notifications off for the whole day.
  • Catch-up errands. Banking, admin and big cleaning jobs can wait. If one task is truly pressing, cap it at 30 minutes and do it early.
  • Saying yes to plans out of guilt. If a friend asks to meet, only go if it sounds restful. Being with people can recharge you, but only some people, and only some kinds of plans.
  • Measuring the day. You do not need to come back with something to show for it. Feeling a little calmer is the result.

Getting the most from the day after

The return matters as much as the break. Start your first morning back with the list you wrote, not your inbox. Pick the two most important items and do one before reading email. Expect a small bump of catching up, usually an hour or two, and accept it as the price of the day rather than proof it was a mistake.

Notice what helped. If the walk did more than the nap, or the afternoon cooking cleared your head, those are clues for ordinary weeks. Many people find that a regular half day each month, used the same way, prevents the need for an emergency day later.

Frequently asked questions

Is it okay to call in sick for a mental health day?

In many workplaces, yes. Mental strain is a real reason to be unwell, and most sick leave policies cover it. Check your contract or handbook, keep the message short, and you do not need to give details.

How often should you take a mental health day?

There is no fixed rule. Many people find one planned day every two or three months is enough to stay steady. If you find yourself needing one every week, that is a sign the underlying workload or stress needs attention.

What should you not do on a mental health day?

Avoid checking work messages, piling on errands and spending hours scrolling. These keep your mind in the same busy state. Aim for sleep, time outdoors and one slow activity instead.
